Poi / Poi Sets / How To Poi

Poi Spinning is a traditional performing art of the Maori people of New Zealand. Poi has steadily been spreading its charm and wonder across the globe and is now enjoyed worldwide as a performing art – as well as a fun hobby or exercise alongside other forms of object manipulation such as juggling and staff spinning.

Poi involves a balls or balls (loosest meaning possible) at the end of flexible cords that are held in the hands and swung around in mostly circular patterns. You can learn How to Poi with an Instructional Poi DVD and there are plenty of different Poi sets to practice with.

Poi Spinners often employ bright colours and attach to their pois, glowsticks, tails or streamers to enhance their aesthetic impact and emphasize their graceful movements. Usually Poi performance will take place after dark to maximise the visual effects.

Beginners often start out with rolled-up socks on the ends of a bit of string as it’s not a great idea to delve into Fire Poi until you have mastered control of Pois that aren’t on fire.

  1. You’ve been hanging around with Fire Monkey too long!

“Beginners often start out with rolled-up socks on the ends of a bit of string”, I used to live with 5 people in my 1st year, 4 of them took this circus freakishness up but with tennis balls in extremely long (like knee high) socks spinning them by the open ends.

And you say beginners… they’re still just on the socks 3 years later 😛 They do study archaelogy though…

  2. Mind you, after all that raving I checked out the section. Nice modern stuff!

I especially like the Flamin Chains Poi but more because they look like the perfect riot weapon than for any artistic merit at the moment 😛

Knew Fire Monkey was behind all this before I even looked 😛

  3. Btw have you heard!

Jacqui Smith is standing down! Apparently according to BBC news at ten (available at bbc)
